Hello again
The Alfa 33/2 was a successful 2 litre sports prototype, with impressive results in 1968 including 4th, 5th and 6th at Le Mans.

I started modeling the 33/2 in 2012 and this is my fourth and final version. All were based on the Proto Slot model of long-tail Le Mans 1968 car.
The Scuderia Madunina Alfa 33/2
In 1969 Alfa went up-market, developing the completely new 33/3 with a 3 litre engine to compete with the Porsche 908. The 33/2s were thought to surplus to requirements but things went badly wrong with the new 33/3 and the older car was reinstated as an occasional works car in 1969. By 1970 the 3 litre car was starting to perform reasonably well and the 33/2s were sold off to privateers. One of these was the Scuderia Madunina which derived from Milan and had a long racing history going back to 50s Formula Junior and Sports car races. By this time some of the 33/2s had lost their roofs and they were now formally sports cars, not prototypes, because more than 25 had been produced.

For the 1970 Targa Florio the works Alfa team entered four new 33/3s but they were eclipsed, not only by the new Porsche 908/3, but also by the old privateer 908/2s and none finished. The honour of Alfa Romeo was therefore left in the hands of the outdated and underpowered private entrant 33/2s. Remarkably, the Madunina entry placed 7th on distance and 1st in Class, finishing behind four 3-litre 908s and two 5-litre Ferrari 512S cars. Part of the reason was the recruitment of Jonathan Williams into the team when his Abarth drive evaporated.

Heres a few pics of the build. The basic body shape was all there in the 1968 long-tail body but the roof and the long tail needed to go first.

I built the rear deck and cockpit surrounds from plasticard then built the engine bulge with Chemical Metal. Heres an early shot, with the beginnings of the engine cover and the cut-off rear.

Finally, here's the complete set of four. A lot of work but worth it! All have Slot.It chassis and NSR rear tyres, so they all handle nicely.

Well, that's it for 2015 - there's about 20 shells waiting for 2016!
