I seem to have seen so many of the same car kits on E-Bay and converted many of them to slot cars that I was looking for something different. This Humvee is actually a 1/35th Tamiya scale model but knowing a Humvee was a pretty wide vehicle I thought I could use the 1/32nd box-o-bits to get it up and running.

Firstly the kit detail is FANTASTIC, the moulding is incredibly detailed.
The body is 6mm wide so, as expected, its not too small. As it turned out the transmission tunnel is very wide and a old pod with a long can motor fits in the space perfectly. This pod was rather tired having been used in a rolling road jig I made and was just about to be thrown out. The motor came from a Spirit Le Mans car (I think). That was the back end taken care of but the front was an issue but I recovered the front sub-frame from a GSlot chassis. For those that know this car its the one with more screws that Casanova and almost completely useless sorry but thats just my opinion. However cutting off the front subframe and mounting to pod fitted perfectly and an extension to lower the guide and it was rolling with a lot less effort than some of my conversions.
The wheels were recovered from the wheel box having found no other use for these huge beasts which I bought as an investigation and subsequent experiment in building a multi-cantilever sprung chassis for raid type driving.
The body-shell was built mostly as instructed. A front bull bar was built as there nothing in front of the wheel at all and this would have meant all crash damage transferred into the body. Now it goes into the chassis which is more robust. I left off the guns as Im not much fond of that sort of thing and anyway they would have come off on the first tumble. The doors are left off so the inside can be seen.
The inserts for the wheels are from an Airfix Fiesta rally kit. The tyre part was ground off until it was the right diameter or the alloy wheel. Pretty convincing I think. The basis colour of the kit is sandyish. I thought a matt green would be a lot more in keeping with the mood.
It really goes quite well round the home track although the body resonates a little bit too much and is noisy. I need to replace the crown wheel... it has a dental problem... some teeth missing and that will help the noise issue. I also added some ballast under the high chassis just to help a bit.
