Hot Ford Escort Mk1

It is no secret that I have a soft spot for a hot racing or rally Ford Escort, it makes no difference whether it is a Mk1 or a Mk2. Zakspeed supplied enough encouragement in the 70’s to get me interested. Seeing that I would never own a real Escort, I had to refrain to a smaller version of it, a 1:32 would do nicely.

Having had an old Scalextric Mk1 body lying in my spares stash, with the idea to, one day, create my own Zakspeed Escort for our Classic Cup racing, I started by cutting out the old spats and grinding out the wheel wells to lower the car, as the rally version from Scalextric is too high and too narrow.

Also found in the spares stash was a redundant Sideways Lancia Beta chassis as a leftover from the Group 5 championship. The wheelbase fitted perfectly and left me the opportunity to drop a Slot.it sidewinder pod into it. I had to trim the chassis to fit under the much narrower Escort. A previously used for Classic racing Yellow can 25K Slot.it motor seemed to be the best choice accompanied by a set of gears to fit.

The new spats was made from an old credit card and bent and shaped to fit.

Somewhere in the decal stash I had my set of Zakspeed Escort decals, which I bought specially for this reason a while ago. It being for the black Mk2, the green and the red stripes on the side was swapped around, but that did not stop me from doing this build. I’ve dug out a set of Sideways BBS wheels amongst the wheels stash and that finished the car off nicely.

Now it needs to have a track test to prove itself and I hope to do that soon, as this will then be the first time I’ll be back at the club since my heart attack and bypass operation last year.
