To glue or to melt the alignment pins

When they factory assemble cars they melt the attachment pins to secure the parts. Should one do this when making a kit or use glue as if one were building an Airfix Spitfire?

Roughly what temp does one need to melt the pins. I think a soldering iron is too hot?
