A few years ago I had a go at the Big Birds race meeting at Rockingham, I raced a standard 24th scale Cox Ferrari 158. For sometime I have thought of having another go but wasn't sure what to race.
As a Jim Clark fan I thought it had to be one of his cars so I have decided to build the car he won the 1962 British Grand Prix at Aintree with, win isn't a strong enough word - he dominated with pole position, led every lap and set the fastest lap.

I have had this original 1960s fibreglass bodyshell for about 10 years, it needed some cleaning up and small repairs but nothing difficult to do.

The shell was obviously based on the Autokits metal kit but has been modified in various areas.

As Big Birds is an event for vintage slot cars I am going to use an original 1960s Cox motor, Cox gears, an SCD brass U-bracket, and 1960s guide, wheels and axles.

I have already made a buck and vacformed the windscreen. I am going to use the Immense Miniatures driver figure which bears an uncanny likeness to Clark.
The next step is to build a simple chassis using piano wire and brass sheet in the style of a 1960s slot car chassis. The next Big Birds is about 11 months away and even at my slow building pace I should just about have enough time to finish the car.
