When the early Penelope Pitlane 1970s F1 resin cars were released (Lotus 72 and March 721X) they came with front alloy wheels and tyres that were comparable to the front wheels/tyres that were produced by Scalextric for the Ferrari 312T and McLaren M23. I.e. they were small and had low profile tyres. Unfortunately, these no longer seem to be available. The parts now offered are the same proportions as the 1970s Scalextric F1/Mini size wheels.
Does anyone know where these aluminium wheels and tyres might still be available? I have spoken to PSR (from where I originally bought the PP kits) and they were not aware of any alloy wheels that size now being available. My lack of clarity during the conversation might have caused slight confusion but it seems that the only F1 front wheels/tyres available to the scratch builder (unless one buys the replacement Ferrari or McLaren front axle sets) are the larger 1970s size. (The current PSR and PP hubs fit the larger tyres that also fit the 1970s Scalextric hubs.)
Anyone any thoughts? Is there a space in the market for someone to produce these wheels and tyres? If you look at the number of F1 scratch builds on the forums (and that the McLaren spare wheels are now sold out) I believe they would sell quite well.
Apologies if the above ramblings do not make much sense but I thought I would put my thoughts out there.
Cheers,
Philip
