Mash up - Aston Martin DBR1

Hope this is the right place for this posting. It’s not a scratch build but a bit of a ‘mash-up’. Whilst I do have some nice cars out of the box I like to fiddle and try and ‘improve’ with some of less able cars. Having said that the least able is the driver...

I got hold of a Scalextric Aston Martin DBR1 off eBay with every expectation of working on it - as you can see it’s a very rare (!) two tone version with barely recognisable wheels that have morphed into lumps of silver plastic.

In the plan:-
a) Make it less tall
b ) Lower the ground clearance
c) Fit some better wheels/tyres, glues and trued, solid front axle and positively fixed motor
d) Rework the dreadful side vents and front grill
e) Give it some braking vents, side exhaust and cooling holes
f) Better rear lights
g) Replace the disc of a ‘steering wheel’ with a proper one
h) Smooth out the moulding lines
I) Paint job
Reasonably pleased with the results.

Had to:-
a) Cut the front and rear valences off and glue to body
b ) Cut out under the driver completely once the body had 2mm cut out of the height and the chassis was cut from the front and rear valence and rained into the body to clear the motor
c) Make up a small exhaust system
d) Make rear lights from styrene tube and Araldite
e) Jig up and make a new front grill from mesh and styrene strip
f) Make up a side grill template and fill and re-cut and fabricate new ones of better shape
g) Reshape the rear wheel arches by filling and cutting and reshape the front to provide wheel clearance
h) Dremel out new air vents over wheels

Painting was a “d-I-s-a-s-t-e-r”. The chosen colour from Halfords turned out to be very un Aston like and I had to try and recover the situation with some light over spray and clear (a kind of paint mixing on the car itself!!!). I anticipate getting another DBR1 and will try and get a better match next time.

Still needs some decals to finish, other minor fiddling and some track time.

Hope you like.

Alan
