Starting to Build the Merc W196

$

Hi All, I am just getting organized to start the GT Merc W196 of Sir Stirling Moss.
George has done a beautiful job on the kit , really very impressive.
I have been gathering data and parts for the build, and when coming to, the wheels and tires a question jumped up.
The specs on the 196 show the tires to be Front 6x16 inch, and the Backs 7 x 16 inch. Thats the tires, Wheels ???
So should I just do the math and go with the closest in wheels and tires, or is there a better way to deal, with this issue of getting the wheels and tires correct.
I checked the 154, but it uses larger wheels and tires so thats a no go.
Suggestions would be appreciated.
Many Thanks
Bob

Tyrrell 006

Hi and happy new year to all forum readers!!!

It has long been an ambition to own a slot version of the Tyrrell 006. (I wanted a model that was better than the Polistil and French Scalextric versions). When DNQ produced a resin shell for Holger they were both kind enough to allow me to purchase one for my own project....and here it is!!!

It has been my longest "scratch" build project but I am pleased with the results.
There seems to have been some variations of the positioning of the sponsors decals and I decided on the Elf being high on the air-box, Motorcraft on the cockpit and the electric cut point being on the air-box. (If I am wrong please do not tell me as I am not going to change them now!!!) wink.gif

Here are a few more photos:

For those who like to know these sort of things, the "ingredients" for this build were:

Resin shell and plasicard rear wing - DNQ
Chassis - Penelope Pitlane
Paint - Halford Vauxhall Regatta blue
Rear wing supports and mirrors assemblies - me
Wheels and tyres - Scalextric M23
Decals - Pattos and Indicals

And here is a snapshot of all my "Tyrrell" builds...

One day I am going to line the complete "Tyrrell" family tree up including the RTR versions and also the cars from BAR, Honda, Brawn and Mercedes biggrin.gif

Big thanks must go Simon for a great shell and to Holger for the inspiration.
(Also thanks to Ian H for also helping to keep the Tyrrell flame burning bright!)
Hope you all approve!!

Thanks for looking and all the best for 2015,
Philip

Hesketh 308

A mixture of inspiration of viewing other builds on here and frustration of main manufacturers neglect, I decided to build a Hesketh 308.
I know that there were/are some models available as kits but having viewed what is possible from other builds on here I thought I would have a go on my own.

I decided on the Scalextric Tyrrell 007 (C121) as the doner for a few reasons.
It looked to have similar wheelbase and proportions, I had one without a rear wing that had seen better days so if I messed it up it would not hurt my wallet apart from plasticard, Mlliput, glue etc.

First hack, plasicard glued, smoothed, mirrors and extended front wing fitted.

Searching the internet for images it becomes apparent the small differences the car had for each race/qualifying.
I am not certain if my version is totally accurate, there will always be some comprises in any model slot car, (usually an electric motor and a piece of vertical plastic underneath the front).
Sides of tub slightly wider at front than I would have liked but any narrower did not seem possible.

Bits and pieces on to vaguely look like suspension etc.

Some tweeking of the cockpit profile and airbox required.

A reminder of what it once looked like.

Slightly reworked rear of aibox.

A view of the rear radiators.

The main parts of the build. Aluminium tube used for mounting front axel.

Roll bar, side radiators, paint and James in place.

Trial run.

Another view on home track, I will wait a while for paint to fully harden and cure before applying decals.

Wheels, once a favourite subject.

I feel inclined to start a new thread. Bob's build of the W196 might include a bit about wheels, but not a debate on the subject.

May I suggest that the wheel comments are posted here?

Sorry if I helped steer things off thread Bob,

Cheers, Peter.

Production is not exactly fast here at Noble Towers (barely better than Alfa's at Arese, where in some years they barely produced more than single figures), but here are my renderings of two fine body shells from Munter. As you can see I am taking a rest from various shades of Italian red - much of which will soon be finished.

ZERO Paints - Mini review

Zero Paints - Mini review.

Over the years I have used various different types of paint for building/painting slotcars and scenic models/buildings etc. Up until recently the only way I obtained a particular colour was to go to Halfords and get a rattle can mixed to order or use one of their pre-mixed colours. The rattle can route worked OK, but was never ideal as the spray pattern was so large it forced me to spray outside in good weather.

I recently have struggled to get what I need from Halfords (they seem to reduce the number of colours they hold in stock for mixing and if you don’t have a chassis number look at you rather oddly!). So I started looking for alternatives.

For several years I have used Vallejo paints for details etc. – hand brushed and occasionally airbrushed sprayed, but this need thinning down and different colours need different mixes to spray. When it does spray it works well, but they don’t have a huge range of automotive colours and mixing them yourself is a pain.

Tamiya is not a brand I have used much so can’t really comment, but again their range is not vast.

So what to do?

After searching around I quickly came across ZERO PAINTS who offer to mix paint in small quantities to order – they specialise in automotive colours and if you provide as much info (including photos) they will match as close as they can to a colour (in addition to a large range of popular colours) they even match to decals.

Having never used them before I was sceptical/nervous, but thought no harm could come from a test. So I contacted them a while back to see if they could mix some paint for my Skoda 130L Group B project. I wanted the light Sky Blue colour that the works teams used along with a Skoda white for the main body. I sent them a jpeg of an old Skoda paint card I found on-line and three days later the paint arrived.

The paint comes in a 60ml glass bottle with a screw top. Paint is pre-mixed for use in an airbrush and has a small metal ball inside to mix the paint prior to use (like a rattle can spray). Simply pour into your airbrush (or use a pipet) and spray away.

The colours I have used so far spray flat and true giving excellent coverage and are (IMHO) a spot on colour match.

The dry finish is matt and needs a top coat lacquer to give a gloss finish, but I need to do this anyway to seal the decals. They say Halfords lacquer is fine and I have used this before, but I have also ordered some of their airbrush ready lacquer and will used this soon (I will report back how I get on with this). They also sell a two pack lacquer (come in three parts and needs to be carefully mixed) – not tried this but have seen excellent results – I’m just worried about how it may react with laser printed decals?

I’m also working on a non slotcar project at the moment (a 1/32 scale canal boat) and they have pre-mixed paint to RAL colours. To give you an idea of the range, when I asked for black (thinking there would be just one) they asked what it was for – “I want to spray the window surrounds” – “you will be wanting rubber black then”.

The paint costs £6.89 of 60ml – sounds expensive, but when I compare this to the cost of a Halfords mixed rattle can (£9.99) it’s cheaper and better – assuming you are not going to need 500ml.

Just for clarity – ZERO Paints are not a forum sponsor and I didn’t get a discount – just thought I would share in case anyone was interested.

Hello everyone!

I would like to show you a new model of rallycar I have done on the basis of ARII kit.

This is the Isuzu Bellett 1600 GT which competed in 1969 on the 1000 Lakes Rally, driven by Pertti Khara and Heimo Poutala as co-driver.
Definitely a great classic car rally, that is hardly known in the slot world.

I was long looking for information to check if this model had run in rallies and if someone had made a slot version. And yes ! I've seen some adaptation to slot, but this decoration not.

More info and photos in my personal blog (In Spanish, sorry)

Regards , and thank you very much for your reading.

Can someone familiar with an SM1m (16mm wide for FF050) give me some idea of either the ground clearance with specific diameter tyres or tell me the bushing hole to bottom of chassis dimension.

I think it maybe too much for me even because of the screw head but...

I will be using 19mm diameter tyres.

Dodge Charger Le Mans 1.976

Well today I bring here a little special thing ..... that does not exist in the market, is the fruit of the illusion of several friends,
Flamescustom, Mikius, Joeslot and toni GTO fans all slot, the schratch and everything that relates to Le Mans

As discussed, is a long-term project, where breakfast, ideas and enthusiasm were giving life to this car ..... born from commercial Charger Carrera and Superslot
...... and left them a gem that I've seen to disgrace riding the friendship that have provided me. (if you want to see one well done, seek that of Flamescustom in Pasiónslot, is simply wonderful.)

The car itself, ran at Le Mans 1976 and was once where Nascar made their appearance on La Sarthe, I guess things mktg and others)

A 73 Charger, leading to Le Mans McGriff, father and son ...

It seems that the low octane of European gasoline engine broke ...

The thing is that I've been riding it pump more than anything pq fits perfectly with Charger Superslot which have received the gift of the chassis, wheels, interior and pilot minus the head, as is house rule is Immense Miniatures.

And not much more ...... the car is a tank maintained with a daunting, let Yankee classic car life .....

Best regards,

Jordi

For a long time I've been following the forum trying to learn how to do this and that. About time I stick my neck out! smile.gif

The 444 is of course the for runner to the more wellknown 544. This is how it looked in the first version in the late 40s.

Made of balsa and lots of tamya putty. The under side view shows glued in plastc sheets around windows and wheel arches to get thin and even surfaces. All windows are flat so I will glue in 1mm styrene windows hoping to help strengthen the body.

Hope this is understandable, my english is as rusty as a volvo from the forties...

More to come.

Mk 4 Golf (repainted job)

Following on from my Puma model, I thought I'd have a go at another of my cars from the past and try a go at my Mk 4 V5 golf. This is what she looked like;

I thought about finding a resin mould, but then found a ninco rally version on eBay for cheep and thought a repaint would be better. As a bonus, I'd considered previously putting a wing on the 1:1 car so imagined what it would be like if I'd remade it as a full track day car.

Admittedly painting a model black isn't the most exciting project in the world, so I concentrated on detailing the interior for now. My next step will be to install front and rear lights. For a chuckle, I may also try some fast and furious style under floor lighting (as much as anything, to see if I can do it and see how it looks).

So far I'm pleased with the progress. Next step will to be spray a liquor coat on the top then once my lights arrive to dig the soilder in iron out.

Porsche 917K 1970

A repaint based up the #20 Siffert/Redman car from the 1970 Le Mans race. The car is probably best known as the Porsche 917 driven by Steve McQueen's character Mike Delaney in the 1971 movie 'Le Mans'.

The original model was purchased cheaply on the internet.

Sanded, washed and given a coat of plastic grey primer.

Body painted in Halfords Ford Bermuda Blue.

Interior has been slightly modified and the driver repositioned so he sits lower in the cockpit. I've used a resin head/helmet more in keeping with the period and painted it in the colours of Jo Siffert.

The car will be raced at our local club (Tyneside Slot Car Club) in the Classic Endurance class.

Many thanks for looking.

VW Touareg Paris Dakar

I thought for my next build I would have a try at modifying a kit from Revell which was a snap together set. One trip to the model shop and I found a VW Touareg rally kit for a tenner.

http://www.hobbylinc.com/revell-germany-vw...:32-scale-07132

The model itself is very smart;

I have managed to install the guide and the geared rear axle, hiding wires neatly underneath the floor of the interior. I'm currently having difficulty installing the motor securely in position and making the axles accept a suitable bearing. What I want to do is use as many kit parts as possible instead of replacing, so this of course includes the wheels and tyres.

This will be an interesting one if I can figure it out.

I have been after one of these Airfix widebody Escort's for years and I was lucky enough to locate a bodyshell at Swindon earlier this month.

I sprayed it black, fitted the interior from a Scalextric XR3i and fiited it to a shortened Gom chassis. The wheels are Ninco BBS hubs.

Can anyone of you scratchbuilders give me a tip where you can get spare aerials for slot cars? Can´t seem to find any which I find strange since this is one of the parts that breaks the most on cars.
